2014 starts with a... game?

YES!
Not with a BANG but with a GAME!

Go ahead and click the image to go to the Game Jam website!

Yet another game jam I thought I'd try out just for the fun of it.
Yes, I have spent all night at New Years Eve to create a game!

What I did accomplish in this short timespan

I did come up with something!
It's quite a personal game, very narrational (at least in my head), and something very different.
It's a point and click / escape the room game inspired for example by 999, or other games.

Unity2D

For this I have used Unity's 2D options and I am quite happy with it, really!
So without any further ado, heres my New Years Game Jam Submission!

Out of my mind

Please note that this is just the mockup-art, and just the intro level. So theres not alot of playing involved.
But still, it was alot of fun to work on, and will be in the future, because I want to expand this game to be my 1GAM January submission.

@watacoso will be doing ALL the arts stuff which I am very thankful for and I can't wait to pep this intro up with his beautiful art!

What is the game about?

The game is about something everyone of us has in our minds, something unexplored, and once you start exploring this part of yourself, there is no going back. Once you have found a place unfound, you cannot forget about it.
In order to "get out of it" you have to explore it further and understand every aspect of this.
So exploring this game will eventually teach you to explore something yourself about yourself. Or maybe it's just fun to play point and click adventures!

I will keep you updated for this game! Happy new years!!

No Fun FISSIX - The Game

Games always are designed to make fun, right?
This time I wanted to break the system and design a game that is no fun!

Play via Web Player
Download Linux Build

The main and only menu!

Playing the game with no fun physics

What really happened with this game

This started off as a ludum dare nightmare, a weekend I have worked a days worth of hours, and was left with a few hours to come up with a game idea, learn unity and make it happen.
Obviously, as I have written in a previous blog post, this attempt has failed.

But I don't like throwing food away. Or unfinished projects. So I thought for the sake of OneGameAMonth I wrap this little thing called game up into whatever you see up there.

Because I am quite busy in the holidays, eating unhealthy food and having fun with friends, and actually working (really!), I did not have enough energy to make a game that is fun to play, so here you go!

Starring Bang Bong!

The music you hear in the game is made by Bang Bong, please check them out, they're a cool electro indie band from Germany, and thanks to them my game is actually some fun. Even if it is just playing it so you could listen to the music!

The minimalistic May Challenge

People keep asking me: "What about your next game?".
Amazing, right? Although I don't have anything to show yet about my new game, this is making me very happy! People are actually expecting me to make new games, and want to find out more about it!
Seriously, this kind of feels like a little baby-step towards my dream to be a cool Game Developer, yeah!

Oh, but have you heard about my new game? Nope! I am a little lazy about my game lately, but don't worry!!! I am extremely eager to finish this game this month.
It's a fairly simple game, a puzzle game inspired by Pokemon Puzzle League (highfive to the fans of this game o/), and again I will try to not focus on the appearances. That way I should be able to release at least a minimalistic game this month.

So, like I said I am quite busy this month! There's a lot of Real Life going on lately, that's why I havn't been in the webs these days. Let me introduce you to my American friend @MeganPraz, she's an awesome animator and is visiting me in my humble Trier right now!
You should definitely check out her website if you want to see some cool stuff, plus she even made a little videogame, yeah!

The last two days we've spent a lot of time in trains, exploring Heidelberg and the Black Forest part of Baden-Baden. Here are some expressions of the trip:

AAAAANNNYYYYWAAAAYYYSSSSSSS
Yes, I am working on my game, but doing little to no progress :/ As soon as I am doing progress though, I will let you know, yes? Just look out for some twitter posts, I promise, I will finish this game!

Don't forget to check out Megan's Twitter and website!
Happy weekend, everybody!

Crazy Lava Taxi Game Thing

This is the game of March!
Whoever has an idea what "Crazy Taxi" is about, and loves Lava... well thats your game!

You are a taxi in the crazy lava city with crazy lava people, and those people want to go somewhere else, and you have to help them with their problem.
But these folks are in a hurry, so you better drive as fast as you can to drive them to their destination.

And please note: DO NOT TOUCH THE LAVA.
It's going to cost you some precious time. And as you know, time is money, and your lifetime is limited and constantly running out.

Everytime you are doing a good job at delivering those people, you get paid with more lifetime. When you're too slow, you still have to deliver them, but you're not going to get anything of the time back!

Your goal is to find and deliver all the people on the map. The game ends when either you found all the people and delivered them or your time goes down to 0.
(Btw, everytime you do touch the lava, you loose 5 seconds!)
So, you're in for the game, yes?
You can easily play it in your browser! Please check out the text below the game for instructions and controls!

This game is written using haxe and the engine haxepunk, with the IDE FlashDevelop.

For older versions and prototypes, follow these Links!

The End of March (or: Why I didn't write any blogposts in march)

Beginning of March

Until the 6th of March I was snowboarding/skiing in the Alps, yeah! So I had a little disadvantage, dun duun. Nevertheless, I have decided to learn a new programming language for March:
Click to visit haxe.org
The one who convinced me to use this is my 1GAM partner and mentor @tobiaseriksson
This is the engine I use
So armed with these weapons, I started to learn Haxe, which is quite similar to Java. I think it was fairly simple to adapt this new language and learn the new engine, so thats good!

Progression of March

So first off, I want to tell you something about one of my favourite things in my life. It's a forest youth recreation home of Heilbronn (the city I live in) and I know, that sounds kind of boring. BUT ITS NOT! It's one of the best things happening in my life and I am proud to be part of it. In the past I have attended to it as a kid, in the meantime I am a counselor myself. It's a colorful, loving place, a paradise I would suggest, because it is a very accepting. Passion is what drives everybody there.
So during March there was a ot of stuff going on about this! It takes up alot of time, and I am happy that we barely have electronic devices up there, so I was not able to haxe on my game at all during the time there.

Anyways, during the progression of march I did some progress! The people who follow my tweets have seen all my progress posts and were able to play them hands-on.

But, oh wait, I havn't even told you what kind of game I am making this month, have I?

Crazy Lava Taxi Game Thing

That's the quirky name of my march game. It's a topdown 2D taxi game, where you have to dodge Lava in order to get the people you pick up to the desired destination!
Go ahead an play all the little steps of progress I made, right and simple in your Browser!
March 8
You can read the attached changelog, when you scroll down in the "newer" versions.
Heres the newest version!

End of March

It's a few more days, and I am still not close to finishing the game. But I am getting there! Maybe even with the extended deadline of 4 more days into april. But I am looking forward to finishing this game, it was very fun creating it!

Jetpack Pants!

Well here you go!
Sorry I didn't provide any further info, because I crunched through it and I am going skiing until March and oh gawd no time left!
It works the same way as my previous game, you can check it out on "Games" at the top.
Just download it here!
Have fun! And let me know in case you actually won the game, because it gets pretty rough at the end... Yay!
My post-mortem post will com in March, bye bye!

#1GAM Feb: Gameplay video #1

I made a short gameplay video to show you guys my progress so far!

As you can see, my bad collision somehow works alright, and two different jumping features are implemented, as well as scrolling and ending and dying (which just resets the player).

The next thing I have to work on is a concept actually. So I have this jetpack thing going on, I will probably stick with this. So next step would be to build a concept around this feature, and maybe a little story so I can get some graphics on this thing!

Btw, shout-outs to all the fellow game developers and proud members of the OneGameAMonth-Community! I hope you have successfully climbed "the wall"!
For all the ones who are interested in Game Developing: Take the chance and try to make a game this month! It will truly help you out and experience something new. It's an amazing acomplishment once you stick with it!

Post-Mortem January Game

I've got inspired by a fellow Game-Developer @tonyperriello for making a post-mortem Game blog post!

For those who are not familiar with the term: In the post mortem blog posts I would like to talk about what I have learned and achieved on a personal level from that project, and maybe give like a little insight of code if people want that?

Learned how game developing works, basic collision in java lwjgl/slick2d, 90x90 rule, wrapping up a game is harder than it seems. And to write a nice code!

I have started game developing because first of course I am into games, obviously, but second because I am studying it at a university of applied sciences.
It's crucial to know, how a game actually works (in the framework/engine you work with):

First, all the desired objects are being initialized, so they exist.
Then the game loop starts where first its updating like the positions, states, pressed buttons, collisions and so on.
Then the next picture is being rendered.

What actually blew my mind there is, that every freaking frame is rendered again, and again, more or less from scratch. And that every frame, 60 times per second for the most part, that poor computer has to to thounsands of calculations. Dude, thats hard work!

So, what I've learned in particular from my first game is a lot of java, and the super basics how collision problems work.
So the main task of a programmer is basically breaking down things in little problems, and the next steps are tackling every single problem. For collision it somehow goes like this:
1. Collision detection
2. What to do, when certain objects collide

Okay, now to the hardest thing  I was bound to learn in order to participate in One Game A Month (#1GAM):
The 90x90 rule.
Yes.
That rule again. I think I've mentioned it. When you think you're almost done, well, you're wrong. You are damn wrong. Actually you have barely made it to the half point really.
And that is a frustrating point, more like a wall you have to deal with somehow.
Just let me give you this advice: Don't give up!

Last thing I have learned from this first game: It's froggin important to write a nice and well-arranged code. Things you can't do with a crappy code:
1. Properly ask for help
2. Remember what the code does
And hence 3. Work on that code after some time passed

So, please kid, remember: Keep yo codes clean!

Some stuff about my life recently:
So, right now it's finals time, and tomorrow is my first exam. Maths! It'll be alright I guess. First time I'm in the middle of finals for me, so I am kind of excited, but already super tired of it really.
I have recently found that awesome site www.habitRPG.com, it's all bout gameifing you're life in order to build up new healthy cool habits you want to implement in your life. The first time to-do lists get actually checked off by me on a regular basis! Please check it out, and if you like it, think about funding their kickstarter project :) Good night!

February Game!

You have probably not noticed, but... I havn't been updating my blog lately.. and guess what, yeah, I have an excuse. It's finals time here in Germany, and you know what that means!

Yes! PROCRASTINATION! On my February Game!

Wow. I know, there's alot to say about this... black... pants? Rock with legs? I dont really know actually. Anyway, this is going to be my super simple tiny February game of OneGameAMonth.
For those who have not heard about OneGameAMonth yet, just click the link and check it out, really!

Alhough this blog post sounded promising, I will just leave you with these two screenshots, mkay? Gotta go back to studying, and knitting socks (for real). Go ahead and guess what kind of game it will be.

It's #screenshotsaturday after all.

5Frogger

It's a Frogger Clone where it's all about money family! You play the responsible father of the little frogger family you have created, bringing in the money in this little action birds-view game.
Feel free to check it out!

This game is written in Java 1.6, using the LWJGL and Slick2D libraries.

This is my OneGameAMonth January entry!

Here's a link to all the related blogposts!

Little FAQ
(or let's say, what I assume people might wanna know about it, because noone really asked questions about it)

1. Why is this game so friggin hard?
Because I was the one testplaying it probably. This is my very first game, and I did the mistake that I was the only one testing it, and since it's super boring testing out an easy game, it ended up pretty hard... But you can do it!

2. Where did you get the idea for that kind of game?
I study computer science in focus on videogame programming (sort of), and we had to program a unique clone of the frogger classic game. And I like Zelda so I've put in rupees. Yay!

3. What is "One Game A Month"?
Oh! You should really check it out! It's a very supportive and motivating community with over 3k of gamedevs, from Noobs (like me) up to the high class of awesome game developers, and together we try to MAKE games. You might know that, but whenever you start a project, it's the hardest part to stick with it and put it to an real end. One Game A Month is a personal challenge which an awesome community backing you up!

4. The game doesn't work. Help?
You will need the latest version of JRE (Java Runtime Environment) and unfortunately: Windows. Sorry!
For all the Mac/Linux users: this game isn't so great anyways! Don't worry!
